Promote your other items - FREE from Vendio. Antique Ivory Sadeli Work Bead Box Very nice antique bead box of lovely Sadeli work, ivory inlaid with tiny mosaic. Sadeli Mosaic is the ancient art of working lovely mosaic patterns into the surface of ivory. This very intricate process involves binding rods of different materials together to form pattern "canes", which are then sliced and applied as a veneer into a recess in the ivory surface. The result is a decoration similar the those found on Tunbridge Ware, but instead of wood, the materials used were: plain or dyed ivory, pewter, wood and horn. Since the individual rods were so tiny and numerous, the design possibilities were virtually limitless. Although the roots of this art are Persian, most of the examples that we find today originated in Bombay.3 tiny losses like shown in the photo.
