Description

Bound for Beauty   WOW!  You are bidding on a pair of bound feet alter shoes, red shoes, and a doll with bound feet. I have collected bound feet shoes and accessories over the last 15 years.  All items I am selling were purchased from fellow bound feet shoe collectors as well as in China from reputable Chinese antique dealers while I was living in China and researching the Chinese practice of footbinding.  I have published articles and books in the area of Chinese footbinding.  All materials included here are authentic.  NO FAKES!  I am selling some of my collection because I am retiring.  This means less time for researching/writing about footbinding and more traveling with my husband, more time with my children and grandchildren, and more time to sit and watch the ocean waves from my Hilton Head Island home!   Please contact me with any questions.    A child’s doll from the Qing Dynasty.  It is 9” tall:  notice the bound feet. Intricately embroidered ladder style alter shoes which are 2.5”tall; sole 3” long.  Fraying due to age.  Alter shoes were never worn.  They were used for worshipping “The Goddess of Footbinding” before a girl’s feet were bound.  The heels of these are embroidered with dainty pink flowers.   Late 19th-Early 20th century.  The red shoes are made of satin with tiny satin stitch embroidery; 4.5” long; early 20th century.
