Rare Art Nouveau Pair Of Large Pewter Vases, J.R. Hannig, Dautzenberg, Germany Ca 1900 A rare Art Nouveau pair of large pewter vases, J.R. Hannig, Germany Ca 1900. These vases were made by F X Dautzenberg from models by J.R. Hannig. The magnificent 22in high vases with typical Art Nouveau floral, wheat sheafs and corn relief decorations. Two corn leaves shape stylized handles. Marked to base - F X Dautzenberg 342 and on side J.R. Hannig. For similar pair of vases please see Christie's London, South Kensington 11, February 2003, sale 9563 lot #175. Very good condition. Highly sought after by collectors. Art Nouveau at its best! F.X. Dautzenberg, Rheinische metalwarenfabrik, Krefeld (Germany) was founded in 1899. It was the third big company that made Brittania-metal items in Krefeld. Initially they made items similar to Kayserzinn. Head of their development department was Hugo Meinhardt. Known to have worked for them as designers were J.R. Hannig and A. Piquemai. They were at several exhibitions where they won awards (my source doesn’t say which exhibitions). With the beginning of WWI their Britannia Production was closed. (All this comes from an exhibition catalogue of an Art Nouveau and Art Deco collection). This is more or less a translation from an expert supplied by the librarian of the Antwerp Museum. Hannig Robert A sculptor in Berlin. Born in Liegnitz 7/7/1866. Studied at the academy in Dresden under Hahnel and Berlin. Then under Fremiet in Paris. He has and exhibition at the Berlin Academy (catalogue M-ABB page 55) and in 1894 at the Paris salon of art (Busts of the Ambassador – Count Munster). 1894-1913 the great art exhibition in Berlin. In the catalogue Z.T of the great art exhibition in the years 1894, 1897/99, 1904, 1913 general figures and portrait busts. He also made memorials and fountains. Example the Lutheran memorial in Brieg. 1909 he also worked towards making moulds (eisenguss) Luthjer Statuettes. Singer art exhibition after 1906 catalogue.
