15th Century Thailand Floral Blue & White BowlThis lovely blue and white Thailand bowl has a radiating leaf design within a circle on the inside. It was most likely made by the long-established Chinese Potters that had settled in Thailand of old during the Mongol invasion, and subsequent Yuan Dynasty. By the 15th century, their wares had improved to a much higher level than their earlier pottery. This bowl was not an export porcelain but made for the elite of old Thailand, as evidenced by its high quality of firing and glaze work, and rivals some of the finest work from the early Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD) kilns. Showing beautiful mineralization and other evidence of being buried, it was most likely a funereal bowl. It has the very slight pitting from age and burial, along with manganese deposits that follow tree-root tracks, left after the roots had died on the piece in burial. The manganese followed, like a river delta, where the roots once were. This can only occur with extreme age. While never written about in scientific journals, I started finding this phenomena years ago, and have many examples in our collection, for those who possess a curiosity and open mind. There is a very fine hairline on the upper rim that was once repaired with an epoxy-type glue (see last picture), which filled the space leaving a white line. I have cleaned up the excess glue with a Dremel tool and sander, so if desired, one could use a little acrylic paint to match the colors, and the item will still legitimately TL test. This Thailand blue and white bowl was purchased from an old Tucson estate collection of very high-end porcelains, stoneware and objets d' art. Diameter is 5-1/4" X 2-1/4" high. Please Note: This is not a shipwreck item and could only be owned by the elite of Thailand society. I am also willing to repair the minimal crack myself so it can barely be seen, for an additional $50. Please allow another two weeks to finalize the repair in a manner which will not effect the potential TL test of this fine bowl. In addition to my own inspection, this bowl has also been authenticated by Dr. Timothy Jones, PhD, Anthropologist, formerly with the University of Arizona. Dr. Jones has accepted invitations to the world's largest museum in Beijing, and has received privately guided tours of the Beijing Museum, which included some of the most treasured vault items hidden away from the general public. Dr. Jones has directed the excavations and analyses of more than 20 major sites and 40 archaeological surveys. Dr. Jones now runs his own appraisal and authentication business, and is certified RPA-IAA. Dr. Jones can be reached at 520-744-2766. He helps in the verifications of all our later porcelains, as I do for him on the older items of Jades and pottery. He has no vested interest in our business, and we just truly enjoy each others company and knowledge.
