Description

miguel122240 Store As I promised in my past auctions, that I will bring out of my personal collection some of my rarest pieces in gold-tumbaga.HERE ! is perhaps one of the most beautiful and rarest of them all !!A CALIMA FUNERARY MASK!. The hills of the upper-and mid Calima river region and the flat part of the Cauca Valley province in COLOMBIA,are home to remains of settlements dating back almost 9000 years. This region was occupied by societies that lived in centralized states, between  100 B.C. and 1300 A.D..Societies existed in America whose socioeconomic organization led to the rise of specialist, such as the goldsmiths. In Colombia and the Andes in general,,the impulse for metallurgical innovation came from religious thought and the elite who held power.Metals were used to materialize the ideology that governed everyday life. The presence of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic receptacles and outstanding pieces cast or hammered from gold or TUMBAGA ( alloy of gold and cooper) have been found along the Calima region and which are though to have been created by one of the riches and more complex of the cultures of mesoamerica " the Calimas". In the Calima-Yotoco period (100 B.C.-1300 A.D. ) goldwork and tumbaga reached its highest splendor wich is the production of spectacular objects, pectorals, funerary masks, and receptacles of varying types, and in contrast the finest cast pieces, tumbaga miniatures, pins or lime dippers, topped or decorated with human and imaginary animal figures.   This SUPERB piece, made part of several pieces found in 1946 and that will be presented for auction in the near future and that have been  in my collection for over 30 years, and because of health reasons,I'm offering to you today. The condition of it is almost perfect,it has a few blemishes due to the corrosion of cooper and  a dent on the nose, perhaps produced when found. The boldly depicted human face of hammered section, with big lips and open mouth, jutting upper lip, high rounded cheeks, perfectly triangular nose with repousse nostrils and semi-closed oval eyes under thinly arched brows with repousse eyelids, and ears. These dramatic early calima funerary mask are consistent in their depiction of human characteristics. The hammered sheet-tumbaga technique later developed into more elaborate style. Few of these masks are on the private collections today,an example can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,orfreria prehispanic de Colombia : estilo Calima. In Bogota Gold Museum. So...bid with confidence,a certificate of authenticity and provenance with the history, and names of the authorities in this field that have authenticated these piece(s),will be provided. Thank's
