FRENCH .950 SILVER 14K GOLD LINED - FOX & STORK FABLE!!**In 1929 the company became Lenain Frères. Their mark is on this piece. "L" and "F" separated by interlaced "L"s, one reversed. It is NOT stamped, “Franceâ€, nor does it have a size mark. It is stamped with a crab, as all those restrikes meant for the French market were. When Roger Lenain repurchased the company of this grandfather and father, he acquired the old, c. 1900 thimble dies from Lorillon/Feau, of FRANCE. In 1978, using these TURN OF THE CENTURY DIES, they made a number of RESTRIKES of these DETAILED and WONDERFUL THIMBLES for us to collect. This one, MINTED OF 950/1000 SILVER and GOLD LINED, is called THE FOX AND STORK. It illustrates one of the FABLES OF JEAN DE LAFONTAINE (1621-1695), who was a French poet and prose writer. The fox invited the stork to dinner and served soup in a shallow dish so the stork could not eat. The stork, in turn, invited the fox to dinner, which was served in a long-necked jar with a narrow mouth. The fox could only lick the outside of the jar. Said the stork, “One bad turn deserves another.†Other than being a bit out of round, the thimble is in excellent condition.
