NORTH POLE Large Authentic 111-Year-Old Antique Map Printed in 1897 (DATED), this is a beautifully detailed, 111-year-old color map of the are around the North Pole including Greenland, northern Canada, Alaska, northern Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and more. It measures about 12 by 16 inches (about 30 by 40 cm.), and is in FINE condition. This map is very detailed showing latitude and longitude, topographical features (incuding active volcanoes), countries, settlements and much more. Of particular interest are the historical routes of exploration by various expeditions from Henry Hudson through the Franklin Expedition and up until the Nansen and Johansen Expedition (1895, closed approach to North Pole: 86 degrees, 14 minutes). All these expedtions are marked in read. There are three insets showing enlarged detail of Spitzbergen Island (Russia), Smith Sound and the Robeson Channel (between Greenland and Canada, connecting Baffin Bay with the Lincoln Sea) and Franz Josef Land. Terrain elevations are shown in fine reliefed hachures as was the practice in 19th Century cartography. The entire map is surrounded by an engraved border, typical of finer maps of the period.
