Description

* NO RESERVE AUCTION * "The Meeting"byK. Hoch Fine old German or Austrian original color woodcut on paper by K. Hoch. This piece dates to the very early 20th century, probably circa 1910 - 1925. This is an original hand-printed color woodcut, not a reproduction. This piece is signed by the artist on the front, lower right, in pencil:K. HochIn addition there is a label on the back of the piece, from the publisher, that gives the name of the artist and the title:The Meeting (see photos). This large woodcut still retains it's original matte and hand-painted, gold-leaf Secessionist frame. The frame measures 16.75" x 20.75" and the woodcut measures 12.75" x 13.75" (sight through matte). This piece is beautifully executed with fine bright colors and a beautiful composition and rendering of the subjects. "The Meeting" is a great title for the piece which depicts a Spanish romantic scene with a woman on her horse, deep in conversation with a handsome man. All of the details of their Spanish clothing, the landscape, and the accoutrements on the horse are accurate, but depicted in a stylized manner, somewhere between the Expressionist style and the Secessionist style. This scene is happy and pleasing to the eye. The details of the corners of the original frame are also worth mentioning, as they compliment the woodcut and are nicely hand-painted in the Art Deco style. The frame is in good condition but needs glass or plexiglass over the piece (there is no covering at present).I have not identified the artist of this piece, but the publisher - printer, as stated on the label in the back, Wohlgemuth and Lissner of Berlin, Germany, is very well known. Wohlgemuth and Lissner was a major German publisher of etchings and woodcuts during the early twentieth century. They commissioned such notable artists as Lovis Corinth, Peter Halm, Kathe Kollwitz, Carl Albert Joseph Gaber, Ernst Haymann, and Max Slevogt at this period of time. Further research will no doubt identify the artist. This piece is in good condition overall, however the woodcut print is laid down onto a very thin artist's board and that in turn is attached to the matte on all sides (this appears to be how it was originally presented). The colors are bright and not faded and there is no damage to the woodcut. The matte, which is original to the piece, is toned and should be replaced with a new one. The frame is in good condition with some slight wear to the corners and a few other spots.
