Get Vendio Gallery - Now FREE! " Cyclopaedia Of Universal History -An Account Of The Principal Events In The Career Of The Human Race From The Beginnings Of Civilization To The Present Time. From Recent and Authentic Sources " by John Clark Ridpath , LL.D. NOTE: The spine titles have " History Of The World ". The Jones Brothers Publishing Company 1890. First Edition edition I believe. Sold only by subscription (stated). Large books: 680, 796,788, 915 pages. Measure approx. 8 by 11 inches. FULL of engravings and portraits and color (and other) maps and two page color charts. Some of the engravings are full page. Color and black and white maps. An portrait/photogravure of Ridpath opposite the title page in volume one. Some of these are separated from following or preceding pages by tissue-like papers. FAR too much content to list it all. By category: Vol one:"Oriental Monarchies and Hellenic Ascendency " Vol 2::"Roman Ascendency and The Dark Ages " Vol 3: " Middle Ages - Age Of Revolution-Modern Monarchies " Vol 4:" Nineteenth Century ". All are full leather bound with printing in gold on the spines against red and black rectangles. They range from fair to good condition. The first volume has a split up the entire front spine edge leaving a flap (some glue will repair this). Also a small piece of the spine cover is missing onthe bottom. Heavy wear/fraying around the edges and corners. Some surface wear and spotting and scrapes, holes in the leather. The front cover is still barely attached with some thread. The rest of the binding is pretty tight. Marbled endpapers inside the covers. Some yellowing of the pages and some foxing on some pages. A bit heavier around the illustrations. The first tissue-like paper on the title page has a piece missing. One corner is missing on one engraving and also a chip on the edge further down. A few small bent corners. One page is torn completely loose but it is all there. It can be taped back. Some creases and chips on the edges of this page also. Most of the pages are good though with only a bit of yellowing. An occasional smudge. Some thread is showing inside the back cover but the cover is still fairly firmly attached. Volume two also has some heavy wear around the edges of the leather with a chip missing at the top of the spine. Surface nicks and scrapes in the leather. Tight binding. Not too bad inside. Some yellowing but nothing serious. Occasional foxing and a smudge here and there. A bit more foxing around the illustrations or tissue-papers. A chip on the edge of one page. Small bent corners. Volume 3 again has a chip at the top of the spine with a small flap here. Also split in the leather down the front spine edge and leaving a flap. Some glue will repair this.. Chipping in the black rectangle leather. Heavy wear around the edges and corners in the leather. Very heavy on the top right corner withe a bit of leather is missing. Some surface wear and spotting and a couple of small cracks on the leather. Scrapes in the leather on the back. Mostly tight binding. The front hinge is a bit weak near the bottom. Some yellowing of the pages and some foxing but mostly near the illustrations and the tissue-like papers. (Still nothing bad). One tissue-paper has some splits in it. Some smudges. One page has a split on the edge over a bit. A couple of pages at the end have rough edges and are partially loose in the crease. Some thread is showing inside the back cover but still tight. Volume 4 has a large chip missing at the top of the spine. Split down the spine edges but still firm. Frayed at the bottom of the spine. Heavy wear on the corners -down to the paper on a couple . Surface wear and spotting and some scrapes in the leather. A bit more on the back. The binding is still fairly tight for the most part but the front and back hinges are weak with some thread showing here. Still attached through. An engraving of Abraham Lincoln is opposite the title page and separated from it by a tissue-like paper. Some scribbling on this paper (an outline of his head). Some yellowing of the pages and occasional foxing. Occasional smudges. A split on the edge of one page. The last few pages at the end of the book in the Index are loose and rough around the edges. A few bent corners. I tried to discover all the flaws that I could but I may have missed a few. I think I listed all the major ones anyway. This set is rare and hard to find complete and HIGHLY collectible. Worth the price for the engravings and maps and charts alone. I am selling another nice leather bound set by this author listed separately. NOTE: Shipping should be pretty reasonable by Media Mail. I only charge actual shipping. No handling.
