This is an Original Leaf (page) from "Biblij Czeska W Benatkach Tisstena (The Holy Bible, in Bohemian)" printed in Venice, Italy by Peter Lichtenstein in 1506. Folio size: 8 3/4" by 12 1/4". Single sheet/2-sided. Double columns of Bohemian language text printed in Antique Gothic type. Extensively rubricated with hand painted Uncial initial letters and text emphases in red and blue inks. Nice Condition overall, w/a small diagonal tape mend at one bottom corner only barely affecting leaf + some minor "foxing"/dirtiness; otherwise, o.k. This particular Leaf is from the Book of Luke. Frameable/Displayable...A very early example of Bohemian printing, done in an especially charming typeface reminiscent of the earliest Germanic printing. The Republic of Venice provided safe haven for many refugee European printers such as this printer of the old and influential Lichtenstein clan. At this time jurisdiction over Bohemia (modern Czechoslovakia) was hotly contested between Poland and Hungary. The first Bible in Bohemian was printed in Prague in 1488, just 18 years before the present work. A Really Attractive and Displayable Bible Leaf, today 502 years old! Low beginning bid! This Leaf is far too large to fit my scanner, but it is Complete, with nice wide margins and NOT abbreviated as the pictures might otherwise indicate.
