Small male or female figures such as this were used during Sando divination to carry messages to the spirit world. The diviner, most often a woman, would cast a set of cowry shells and interpret them. She would then repeat the message to the small figures known as Tu’ule so they could carry it to the spirits and return with an answer for the client. Small Tui’ule figures such as this are known in a number of local styles and this figure shows long use as there is some softening of features due to much handling. Though a small figure it carries subtle Senufo elements and is a strong example of miniature carving.**039765** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
